Antique Chinese Hand Carved Ivory Chess Set

by Pete Kamphaus
(Parsberg Germany)

This unique, antique Chinese hand carved ivory chess set was bought in China 0ver 75 years ago by my father during WW2. Although it is full with intricate work it is not damaged. They are Brown and White as is the usual. It has been sitting in my nightstand in Germany since 1972. Prior to that it was in the attic of our home in Southern California. Rest assured it has been well looked after.

All 32 pieces are well packed in a protective casing which doubles as a fold-up playing board. The elastic holding the pieces has since lost it's elasticity however the silk inlay the pieces sit in is in original condition as is the fold up playing board which is made of "Teak" wood.

The King is 10cm tall, the Queen is 8.5cm and the pawns are 5cm.

Photographs are attached.

My asking price is only $6000.00 (USD) which includes packaging and shipping.Payment method can be Pay-Pal, Money order, Cash.

I can be contacted by email at [email protected] and welcome any serious offers or queries. The item is currently in Germany with me and can also be seen there if you are in Europe. If you would like to telephone I can be reached at 00491727881852.
Thank you and enjoy.

I'm from asia and i do have the same set. White and red. I think the only difference is that each piece has a lot of details. I had a hard time searching for its value.

1968 Vietnam, Bunker Hill above Khe San
by: Dave Spaulding

I have a set of the same pieces, found in the rafters after we vacated some NVA from a bunker. I learned to play chess on this set, and lost around two hundred games before I stale mated my teacher Douglas/Gator from Florida. I finally sent the set home to Indiana in 1968. It did sustain a chipped ear on one bishop, and some how lost a flag on one of the castles. I now have 100 percent perifial Neurapathy, upper and lower extremities.Unable to use my hands, i would sell my set for $ 2500 / Teak wood box great condition.Opponent pieces have been died brown as those above. 317-441-8591

I have a set that is virtually identical to the set in the photographs, size, appearance, box, everything. I bought my set at a military PX in Vietnam in 1968. Since then I have seen a number of these sets in pawnshops. Most of the sets I have seen were clearly carved from ivory others were plastic though almost identical in appearance. The white pieces in my set have turned slightly yellow during the intervening 47 years, though the set was packed in a cardboard box for most of that time. The pieces in the photos are considerable whiter than mine. I’m not sure what that means. I would like to think that my set was worth $6,000 but with the number of them out there I seriously doubt that it’s anywhere close to that value.

I have this set as well. My did brought this back from a military tour, probably 1950. I would love to sell it as I don't play chess.

The original poster has not responded to any of the inquiries on this page. Has anyone heard from him/her privately regarding their questions? I just want to know if $6000 is a good price for this chess set

We have the exact same chess set

I would be interested in knowing if you had it appraised to come up with the $6000 value and how much you eventually sell for, if you don't mind. I need to sell this as part of my father's estate.
