Game 6

White (Koneru Humpy) makes Mistake in Time Trouble

Hou Yifan won game 6 where both players were in time trouble. In the late middlegame Koneru Humpy (White) made a mistake which lead to a winning attack for Hou Yifan (Black).

White played the natural looking but dubious move 33.Rg1? in the position above to protect g2 on time. (best is 33.Bb4, but hard to find in time trouble) After this inferior move Black had advantage and started an attack against the weak square g2 playing Re2. Now the black bishop at c6 and the rook are pressing on g2.

The game continued 33.Rg1? Re2 34.Bd4 Rxf5 35.Bc4 Rd2 36.Bc3 Ne4! (threatens checkmate at f2) - see position below

After 36...Ne4 the knight enters the game and the white kingside comes under too much pressure.

Now 37.Rge1?? lost immediately to 37...Ng3+ 38.hxN Rh5+ 39.Kg1 Rxg2+ 40.Kf1 Rh1 mate. / see position below

Better is 37.h3 instead of 37.Rge1??, then g2 can be defended but the rooks penetrate to the second row and this would lose the game in the long run. For example 37.h3 NxBc3 38.RxN Rff2 39.Rg3 Rxb2 winning material.
