Womens World Chess Championship 2017

The Women’s World Chess Championship 2017 was held in Tehran/Iran from 10 February to 5 March 2017. This time it was not a match between two players but a 64-player knock-out tournament. The winner would be the new women’s world chess champion. The final was won by Tan Zhongyi over Anna Muzychuk in the rapid tie-breaks.

The former world chess champion Hou Yifan (China), who used to defend her title in matches before, was dissatisfied with the current FIDE’s Women’s World Championship system and did not participate in the knock-out tournament. Other top players, the 2015 Women’s World Champion, Mariya Muzychuk, and US Women’s Champion N. Paikidze did not participate either because it is mandatory for women in Iran to wear a hijab in public. World number 4 Humpy Koneru and 7-time US Women’s Champion Irina Krush did not participate as well…
