Oriental Chess Set offered – Pre regulated, circa 1962
I purchased this hand carved set in Hong Kong in 1962 while in the military.
It has remained in its case more nearly all of the last 54 years.
Each piece stands on carved balls within a ball. The smaller pieces have two balls, the queen’s three balls, and the Kings, four. The 32 pieces stand between 2 ½” and 5 ½ tall.
The inlaid case has no chips or scratches. The pieces are still in pristine condition, although some of the dark pieces show some slight fading of the brown dye back towards their original white color.
The white pieces are still white. I was 19 years old when I purchased the set and noticed the pieces tended to be top heavy. So, I attached a coin to the bottom of their stands and cloth to the bottom of the coin for protection of the case. Now they are considerably more stable.
I have the appraisal done by a professional in 1990 stating: “32 Ivory men, Oriental grained wooden box. Very well cared for. 16 dyed, 16 white. The stands on certain ones have carved balls within a ball. All, some smaller, some larger C. 1962, Hong Kong.
Quality: "Better than average”.
Appraised at $2,500. If you’re interested I can be reached at email@example.com.
