Unknown Chess Collection-Ivory or Bone very unusual base drill hole codes?

My cousin purchased this chess set in the late 60's from an auction house in Chicago. It has been in storage in his house until now.

I shot about 140 photos available through the following link;

What I found unusual is that the base of each piece has drill marks on all four side, about 1/8" to 1/4" deep. Is this some kind of coding that the maker used? Or, was the intent of these bases to be ground down and customized based on the purchaser?

I need help from someone who is very familiar with how these pieces were hand made. Any publications or sources would be helpful.

I will add a few photos, in case the above link does not publish.

Thank you,

Gene
