Garry Kasparov (Elo 2849) defended his title against the new challenger Vladimir Kramnik (2772) in a 16-games-match. Kramnik won because he was better prepared in his openings especially in the Berlin Defense and won the match with two wins, 13 draws and no losses and became the 14th world chess champion.
