Question:
Re the famous Paul Morphy/Opera game- When Morphy “checkmated” the opposition, why could the opposition just capture the attacking piece? It was on the square right next to the opposition’s king, and it was then the oppositions move!
As I said- I am just learning!

I guess you are talking about this game in the video below.
Morphy’s Opera House Game
At the end if Black captures the queen then Paul Morphy (White) gives checkmate with the rook.
The rook is protected by the bishop so Black cannot capture the rook at d8 with his king. Black is checkmate.
Please learn chess notation or nobody knows about which position you are talking about.
